FC Barcelona had only lost one game all season yet it would come to the very last day of La Liga for the title to be decided. A win would guarantee FC Barcelona’s second consecutive league title having just a one point lead over Real Madrid entering play on Sunday.

Early on Barcelona struggled offensively to get into sync with Xavi Hernandez unable to play due to suspension and Andres Iniesta starting on the bench just coming back from injury.

Valladolid were the first to strike in the fifth minute when Victor Valdes could not control a back pass from Pique and gave it up just in front of goal. Manucho controlled the ball with an open net in front of him and took his shot, luckily for Barcelona Carles Puyol was able to slide and deflect the ball saving a for sure goal.

The offensive attack of Valladolid continued following the save by Puyol with from Baraja and Pele but Barcelona’s defense was able to hold them off.

Following the ten-minute onslaught by Valladolid, Barcelona began to come to life and their high-powered offense led by Pedro, Messi and Bojan started to take over.

After close attempts by Toure and Messi failed to find the back of the net it was Luis Prieto who provided the first goal for Barcelona off a deflected Pedro shot attempt in the 27th minute. The own goal by Prieto would serve as the beginning of the end for Valladolid.

Four minutes later Barça would go up 2-0 when Lionel Messi took the ball down the field and setup Pedro on the right. Pedro controlled the ball and sent it low between the keepers leg giving his side a commanding lead.

With a two goal lead to start the second half Barcelona looked well on their way to the La Liga title and content with just maintaining possession.

In the 62nd minute Lionel Messi came one goal closer to tying Ronaldo’s 34 goals in La Liga when he was set up beautifully by Yaya Toure who danced his away around the Valladolid defense and found Messi all alone at the back post.

With a three goal lead and Real Madrid tied with Malaga the Camp Nou started to go crazy with anticipation of the teams La Liga title.

In the 76th minute the fans would really have something to cheer for as Lionel Messi added his second goal of the day, tying Ronaldo’s record. The goal for Messi, his 34th of the season, came again off a Toure pass and Messi then went to work dodging the Valladolid defense and then changing direction on the keeper and putting his side up 4-0.

As time ran down Pep Guardiola made sure to get Andres Iniesta into the match so he could receive an ovation as he was determined to return from injury before seasons end. Also making an appearance late was Thierry Henry who will be leaving the club this summer for most likely the MLS and Zlatan Ibrahimovic whose future is in question following a disappointing second half of the season and the rumored signing of David Villa.

With the victory Barcelona ended the season with just a single loss and 99 points, three ahead of Real Madrid who ended up drawing with Malaga.
