FC Barcelona dismantle Sevilla 5-0 with two coming from both Messi and Villa
FC Barcelona regained their killer instinct on Saturday night at home against Sevilla. So far this season there has been question about Barcelona’s consistency, depth and how they would be able to keep pace with Real Madrid who have been on a scoring tear. Well Pep Guardiola’s men answered all of those questions with their performance.
It did not take long for FC Barcelona to get on the board Saturday with Lionel Messi finding the back of the net in the fourth minute after collecting a deflected shot by the Sevilla keeper and beating low.
Barcelona continued to dominate following the Messi goal and twenty minutes later it would be David Villa’s turn to add on to Barça’s lead. Villa received a pass from Lionel Messi on the edge of the box cutting back inside and sending a brilliant curling shot past Jari Varas. The goal for Villa looked to rid him of the scoring slump he had been in since coming to the club this past summer.
Sevilla found themselves two goals down as halftime was approaching and looked to be very frustrated with Barcelona doing whatever they wanted offensively. Just as things looked like could not get worse for them, Konko was shown a second yellow for a take down from behind on Pedro. If it was possible for Sevilla to remain in the locker room for the second half they might have been thinking it would be a better option.
To start the second half Sevilla manager Manzano shifted his defense, making two player substitutions following Konko’s ejection. The moves did very little to slow down Barça as they added a third goal seven minutes into the restart. The goal coming from ex-Sevilla player Dani Alves who had the sense of mind to follow a poorly executed back pass from Romaric to the keeper which Alves deflected in midair past the keeper.
Messi added a second goal on the night in the 63rd minute giving him an astounding 40 goals in 42 league games, 14 coming in the 12 games this season.
David Villa capped a great performance on Saturday night with his second goal of the night coming in the 90th minute giving his side a spectacular 5-0 victory.
