FC Barcelona make HUGE statement with 5-0 humiliation of Real Madrid
Pep Guardiola all week would not be drawn in by reporters when trying to get him to make comments about Mourinho and some of the negative comments he made toward Barcelona. Instead he would respond with his teams play on the pitch.
To start the match Pep decided to go with Eric Abidal in the back instead of Maxwell with hopes of slowing down Ronaldo. He also opted to go with Pedro upfront in hopes of giving Iniesta more freedom in his more accustomed central position.
From the opening whistle Barça came out on the attack. Lionel Messi came close to getting his team on the board in the fifth minute when his lofting shot from the right edge of the box cleared the out stretched Casillas but hit off the crossbar. Five minutes later however Barcelona would take the lead. The goal coming off a pass from Iniesta that found Xavi in the box who brilliantly flipped the past Casillas, bringing the home crowd to their feet.
Real Madrid tried to counter following the early Barcelona goal when Di Maria sent in a blast but it was deflected by Victor Valdes. Five minutes later Mourinho would find his side down two goals when David Villa’s shot was deflected by Casillas right to Pedro for the easy goal.
With his side down two Ronaldo’s frustration started to show. While trying to recover a ball that went out of bounds from Guardiola in the 32nd minute he decided to push Pep. The move earned him a yellow card and also served to only increase the hatred home fans have for the striker. The move by Ronaldo increased the tension between the two sides and it looked like tempers were close to boiling over.
At the half time whistle Barcelona had all the momentum in their corner and the home crowd was on the edge of their seat waiting for their side to take the pitch to start the second half.
Guardiola did not make any changes to start the second half. He would only have to wait ten minutes for his side to put the match seemingly out of reach when David Villa beat Casillas off a great pass from Lionel Messi.
Villa added a brace two minutes later off another great pass from Messi that he put in through Casillas legs. The four goal lead had the crowd going crazy and Mourinho looking like he wished he was back in Italy.
Barcelona continued to toy with Madrid making them at time look like kids going up against men. Pep and his players showed up on Monday night prepared for battle and they made a statement that the whole world would hear.
In extra time Jeffren added a fifth goal on the night coming off a Bojan cross and adding further humiliation to Real Madrid. Just prior to the final whistle sounding tempers finally boiled over when Carvalho and Ramos went after Messi bringing down with a dirty tackle. Ramos then grabbed Puyol by the face, when the captain got angry with the dirty foul, and pushed him to the ground. Ramos was immediately shown a red card and it took a minute or two for the two sides to separate.
Messi would be fine and the whistle would sound a minute later giving FC Barcelona a great victory and also a two point lead going into the weekend.
