La Liga week one postponed due to players strike
A last ditch effort on Friday afternoon by Spanish Professional Footballers’ Union (AFE) and the Liga de Futbol Profesional (LFP) to reach an agreement over unpaid wages and avoid a players strike failed resulting in the first week of La Liga being postponed. This is fourth strike since the league began back in 1929 with the last one occurring back in 1984.
All the fuss is over an agreement the AFE is trying to get in place that would allow players to be paid from a “guaranteed fund” in the event that their club goes bankrupt.
The strike results in the postponement of FC Barcelona’s match Sunday against Malaga.
Both sides are going to meet again on Sunday and Monday in order to try to reach an agreement and avoid postponing the second week of the season also.
If an agreement is not reached by weeks end the Gamper Cup is also at risk of being cancelled due to a fine that possibly be put on the club for participating in a match during the strike.
