Following months of rumors the worst kept secret in the MLS will finally come to a close as Thierry Henry will make his move to the United States.
Henry will bypass the final year of his contract to join the MLS’s New York Red Bulls in a ceremony on Thursday. Henry looks to revitalize his career after struggling for playing time last season in Barcelona.
Though the New York Red Bulls will not confirm the signing there is little doubt who the “designated player” will be. Two weeks ago Joan Oliver told the media that Henry would be free to leave the club and hinted that a move to the MLS was likely.
According to the Red Bulls official website, Sporting Director Erik Soler has also announced that they will be announcing a third designated player will also be announced. Speculation is that the third player will be Rafael Marquez.
Marquez has been questioning returning to Barcelona following the World Cup since his playing time has been drastically reduced under Pep Guardiola.
Soler’s comments point to Marquez as he stated that the player to be signed was “still under contract with his club” and that “he could play many positions on the pitch.”
